A little bit about
Watchung Reservation in Watchung, NJ
The Watchung Reservation history trail is a 6-mile trail that visits and identifies sites of historic interest in this 2,000+ acre preserve, located in the northern portion of Union County. The reservation consists mainly of the upper valley of Blue Brook, between the ridges of First Watchung Mountain and Second Watchung Mountain. A dam near the headwaters of the creek creates Lake Surprise.
The Reservation is part of the Union County Parks system and was designed by the Olmsted Brothers of Brookline, Mass., the celebrated landscape architects who designed New York's Central Park and scores of other notable public lands. The stops along the history trail are marked with pink blazes, with signs on posts identifying the location of each site.
Stories of paganism and witchcraft surround what is known as the Enchanted or Magic Forest in the Reservation. The Enchanted Forest is actually a pine plantation of 16,000 trees placed in "endless, ruler-straight rows" by the New Deal-era Civilian Conservation Corps during the 1930s. The forest contains white spruce, red pine, and Norway spruce which are not native to the area.
