A little bit about
Cross Estate Gardens in Bernardsville, NJ
The Cross Estate Gardens have a history going back to 1738 when it was originally built as a farmhouse. In 1996, Mrs. William K. Vanderbilt II willed the house and its surrounding land to the New Jersey Historical Society with the wish that it be preserved as a public garden for future generations to enjoy. The National Park Service assumed management of the property in 1997 and opened it as part of Morristown National Historical Park in 1999 under a cooperative agreement with NJHS. Visitors are welcome daily from 8am - 8pm during the summer months, and parking is free.
The formal hardscape consists of two separate gravel walking paths connecting each garden area with large stepping stones set into the gravel pathways. Please note that pets are not allowed in the Gardens. There are four distinct areas of interest on the property: The Main House Garden, Rose Garden, Native Plant Area and Children's Corner, each offering opportunities for inspiration in your engagement session photographs!
The Main House Garden allows for photographs to be taken from the front exterior across the lawn towards the porch of this fine example of Hudson River School period architecture.
The Rose Garden allows a photographer to capture a formal image that is full of detail and perfectly manicured. During the summer months, nasturtiums, marigolds and other annuals fill in between the rose species. This garden is most lovely during "peak-bloom" which is typically early July through mid August depending on weather conditions.
The Native Plant Area offers you a chance to include your significant other or love interest with beautiful native plants such as trillium, mountain laurel and ferns. The path from this area leads up to a small pergola near the house.
The Children's Corner is a nook tucked away behind the wisteria covered pergola that allows you to capture your engagement photos in an informal setting with beautiful background views of the surrounding gardens and mountain laurel alee.
